(WBIR) – Internet speed could get a whole lot faster in parts of Knoxville. Comcast announced Thursday morning the company plans to offer 2-gigabit internet in the Knoxville area, starting June 2015.
In a release, Comcast said the service would be available to 190,000 customers in the Knoxville area. The company claims the internet will be the “fastest residential Internet speed in the country.”
Comcast recently launched “Gigabit Pro” in Houston, Chattanooga, Nashville, Atlanta, Florida, and California. Company representatives said they hope to roll out the service nationwide by the end of the year.
The 2 gig Internet will require installation of fiber-to-the-home equipment and for houses to be near the Comcast fiber network.
No word yet on how much the faster Internet will cost or which homes will be able to get the service.
