Back at the dawn of time, many businesses created Facebook accounts to connect with their customers. It wasn’t until 2007 that Facebook first created pages of specifically for business. But even to this day, many businesses use personal profiles instead of what are now called the Fan Pages, which are intended for businesses, organizations, causes, brands, celebrities, and more.
Facebook does not like this, because it confuses the roles within the Facebook universe. So they are “strongly” encouraging any business or marketer who is using a personal profile to promote business activities to convert their account over to a Fan Page.
Here’s a simple tutorial on that task is accomplished:
When you convert your personal account to a Facebook Page, your current profile picture will get transferred over, and the people who are currently your friends and followers will become your new Page Fans. Your account’s username will become the username for your Page, and the name on your personal account will become your Page’s name. If you want your Page to have a different name, you’re going to need to create new Page.
When you’re ready to convert your personal account to a Facebook Page:
STEP #1 Go to Profile to Page Migration
STEP #2 Click to choose a category for your Page
STEP #3 Select a more specific category from the dropdown menu and fill out the required information
STEP #4 Click Get Started and follow the onscreen instructions
Pretty simple right?
REALLY IMPORTANT NOTE No other information or things you’ve shared will be moved over to your new Page, so be sure to save any important info before converting your account. You can:
Download your info, such as your sent and received messages and the photos and videos you’ve uploaded to Facebook.
Appoint a new group admin to any groups you manage. You’ll be unable to manage groups once the conversion begins.
THE MAJOR BENEFIT OF A FAN PAGE
So you might be kicking and screaming into this process, but here’s one really important reason why transferring your personal profile to a Fan Page makes so much sense (aside from the fact that Facebook is going to require you to do this anyway)… You can advertise on Facebook.
Facebook’s ad platform is super targeted, comparatively inexpensive, and amazingly powerful. The one limitation of it all, is that a Fan Page is required in order to run an ad. But what’s in it for you, you might ask? Facebook ads drive leads to your business and help you make sales too highly targeted prospects. You are in business to make money, right? If so, then you need to seriously be looking at Facebook ads. And only a Fan Page Will allow you to run them.
