If you are a parent of a child or a teenager that uses the Internet you may have some concerns. There are steps you can take to make the Internet a safe place for your children.
Here are some Internet safety tips:
1. Be aware of how easy it is to Create Identities Online. Everyday people make friends online. It is much more convenient than meeting in person. The problem is you can’t actually see who is on the other end of the computer. This makes it easy for someone to be anyone they want from anywhere in the world. With all of the social networking and web 2.0 sites on the net anyone could lie and pretend to be someone they are not.
2. Look out for Internet predators. In the previous paragraph we described how easy it is to create a false identity. These individuals lie about their age to lure naive children into their trap. These people are called “Internet Predators” and they prey on children like yours. Their objective is to approach and contact children online. Unfortunately children, teenagers, and parents are unaware that the person is an Internet predator until it is too late!
3. There are zillion websites online to choose from. The Internet is a great place to do research to find information for school projects. But there are so many sites that it can be dangerous. Your child could access social networking websites, chat rooms, adult websites, and websites that promote violence.
The Internet is typically safe for your children to use but it is better to be safe then sorry. If you are unsure about how to apply Internet safety in your home do your research and be on top of your kids about their online activities.
