One person arrested for allegedly damaging internet cables in Wausau | News

WAUSAU (WJFW) – One person has been arrested in Wausau following a wide-spread Spectrum internet outage impacting the west side of Wausau and surrounding communities Saturday morning. 

George E. Wood, 55,  was arrested Saturday afternoon, just hours after police were made aware of the damage. 

Early Saturday afternoon, Wausau Police were notified that Spectrum fiber-optic cables providing internet and telecommunications had been intentionally damaged near downtown Wausau. The damage caused service disruption and impacted many individuals and businesses located on the west side of Wausau and surrounding communities.

With help from the city-owned cameras in downtown Wausau, as well as a tip from a citizen, Wood was quickly identified. 

The Wausau Police Department is recommending a charge of criminal damage to a utility service to the Marathon County District Attorney’s Office. 

Wood will be making his first court appearance Monday, Aug 22 at 2 p.m.
