NEW ORLEANS — A widespread Cox outage appeared to hit parts of the metro area Friday afternoon, knocking out internet to customers in at least Orleans and Jefferson parishes.

The outage, possibly caused by a cut fiber line, also appeared to affect phone and cable service for some customers.

The internet, cable and phone company was responding to tweets from customers saying they were investigating the problem, adding that they did not have an estimated time when a fix would be in place.

A spokeswoman told WWL-TV that the outage happened about 1:30 p.m. Several Cox customers, however, told WWL-TV through social-media messages their service was out since the late morning.

“We are assessing the situation and don’t yet know the cause of the outage,” Sharon Souther Truxillo said. “We will release a statement as soon as we have more information.”

A map on the web site downdetector.com, which tracks user-generated internet outage complaints, indicated service was being disrupted in St. Charles Parish as well.
