Disney revealed that they’re developing their own augmented reality headset, as well as a Star Wars game to play on it.
Developed in collaboration with Lenovo, the new unnamed proprietary headset was unveiled at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim and promises to bring Star Wars to life.
Star Wars Jedi Challenges will be the first experience for the headset, allowing you to sway a lightsaber at your enemies in the real world with the help of a lightsaber peripheral or play the Dejarik holochess game from the films.
AR allows for in-game worlds to come to life in your own home, unlike VR which puts you into the game world.
We don’t yet entirely know how this will be implemented, but it’s possible that you’ll participate in lightsaber battles in your own living room or see your own arms in a fictional area popping up in your home.
Although a brief trailer was shown at the event, we don’t yet know the headset’s price, release date, or even its name, but it’ll make use of a mobile device much like the Samsung Gear VR headset.
Either way, we hope Disney put it to good use and manage to find some interesting uses for it outside of just this one Star Wars experience.
