Locksmiths work with both some of the oldest technology still in use and a great deal of the most cutting edge technology on the market. Security is a field that relies on what works while at the same time innovating when it improves the services those who work in the field can offer.
For instance, it’s unlikely that the venerable deadbolt is going anywhere soon. It’s a solid piece of technology that relies on strong mechanical security features to provide excellent access control. However, the means by which those deadbolts are opened is rapidly changing. In the most high security applications, one may see biometric devices such as retinal and fingerprint scanners used as “keys”. Even for home users, keypad-operated locks represent one of the most popular new ways to get into the house. All of this technology requires skilled people to install, maintain and service.
Locksmithing is a field that isn’t as subject to market fluxuations as are other technology-driven sectors. No matter how much the market drops, people will still lock themselves out of their cars and houses; they’ll still lose the combinations to safes; and they’ll still need people to inspect their homes for security concerns. Locksmiths are always in demand and, as long as people value their property, they likely always will be.
Locksmithing as a career combines the best of several different trades. In addition to learning new technology, locksmiths have to maintain excellent carpentry skills, they must be able to work complicated machinery such as key grinders, heavy duty drills and safe-opening equipment, if they choose the safe opening sub-profession; and they must have an ability to work with different customers from all walks of life. Additionally, locksmiths must keep up to date with innovations in equipment relevant to their field. Car manufacturers, for instance, are always improving the technology they use to thwart thieves.
A good locksmith always has the opportunity to innovate by applying the latest technological innovations with their knowledge of the tried and true ways of doing things to give their customers the best service possible. This field, though very old and well-respected, is unlikely to ever be eliminated by technology. It will, however, be greatly enhanced by it.
