Ever since its release in November 2013, Microsoft Corporation’s Xbox One has not been able to keep up in term of sales against its rival Sony Corporation’s Play Station 4, that was also launched in the same period. The sales numbers for the last month have marked a turnaround for Xbox one as it was able to surpass PS4, said a research report by NPD. The software sales were led by Mortal Kombat X, while the overall sales for physical games and consoles went up 3% YOY.
According to Corporate VP Xbox Marketing, Mike Nichols: “As the best-selling console in the US in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month. Xbox One console sales in the US increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent. We are grateful to our fans for their passion and support and are looking forward to sharing more on the best game lineup in Xbox history at E3.”
Although this does not pose any serious challenge for Sony, as its gaming segment turned out to be the revenue driver for the company, as it was able to sell some 22 Million units for FY14. This ended the year on a high note for Sony. Another strength that Sony possesses is it software sales, which is due to the massive lead it has in the install base. Another thing that we must remember is that a huge chunk of sales for Xbox One comes from the US region only, whereas, Sony is an internationally recognized brand.
Nonetheless, it is something to cheer for the Xbox team. With the largest gaming stage to be set at the E3, we will have to wait and see if Microsoft can unveil something that ensures a good future for the Xbox
