Role-playing games are traditionally epic, sprawling affairs. By contrast, Runeblade (free) has you play for a few seconds at a time, and lets you tap a button to furiously slash away at evil fantasy creatures. That’s it, mostly. It’s about as streamlined as an adventure game could possibly be, making it a fair fit for the Apple Watch.
Granted, it’s so simple—at least early on—that it’s easy to lose interest. There’s a compulsive appeal to checking back in to tap on the attack button a few times, but with no storytelling or character building, the moment-to-moment stuff is a little flat. The artwork is great, however, and I’m hoping this initial routine is building to something more satisfying down the line.
