CINCINNATI. Omnitracs officially launched a new website today devoted to electronic logging devices (ELDs) and the upcoming ELD regulation, expected out this fall. The announcement was made at the National Private Truck Council’s 2015 Annual Education Management Conference and Exhibition here at the Duke Energy Center Convention Center.
“We’re going to be posting to the site several times a month,” Tom Cuthbertson, vice president of regulatory compliance for XRS, and Omnitracs company, told Fleet Owner.
Located at ELDfacts.com, the site will include information on the ELD mandate, blogs, case studies, news updates, video tutorials and frequently asked questions. The site will also include an option for visitors to submit their questions to Omnitracs and they will be answered.
Cuthbertson explained that the ELD rule (read the full supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking here) includes many complications to it, although most suppliers are hopeful that only software changes to current products will be necessary to comply.
When an enforcement officer asks a driver for his duty status, that information, under the proposed rule, would need to be transmitted in one of three ways: by email, by wireless web service, or by Bluetooth. Two backup transfer methods must also be available; one must be law be a USB port, with the other either a scanable quick response (QR) code or by “bumping” electronic devices together.
That information would be accepted by enforcement personnel through something called eRODs, or electronic records of duty status. FMCSA will be responsible for supplying officials with this technology, Cuthbertson said.
“We felt it was such a long and complicated regulation that it might be difficult for fleets to understand it,” Cuthbertson explained in creating the website.
The site will serve as a one-stop shop for fleets looking for the latest ELD news and information, Cuthbertson said.
Fleets can sign up to receive alerts as information as posted at www.eldfacts.com.
Also part of the NPTC conference is the annual graduation class for its Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) program. The CTP program is a benchmark for private fleet professionals to measure their knowledge and education surrounding private fleet management.
Omnitracs announced that six members of its team graduated with the 2015 class, bringing to 26 the total number of employees with the CTP designation.
