Web design is the construction of information on a website to be distributed to a user on the internet. Web design includes all aspects of building a website. It is not just about how a website looks, but how it functions. Website design requires an in depth knowledge of graphic design, animation., search engine optimization, marketing and more.
Web designers can either choose to have their site be static or dynamic. A dynamic site is one that can adapt either its content or visual imagery to serve the needs of the end user or adjust to a change in the computing environment. An example of this is if one site is associated with another site and the second site has a change in its database the first state would also automatically update.
Another important function of good web design is its ability to be accessible. In other words a site must be organized using Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines include the use of semantic markup which allows documents to have a meaningful structure and are able to be recognized by other web services of other web pages. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines also insist that sites use hyperlinks that make sense out of context and do not permit the use of frames. The guidelines also ensure that other sites can read the source code and that there are text equivalents for non-text components.
In addition to these high tech functions a good web design also needs to serve a specific function. The purpose of a website serves as a jumping off point for its design. Before deciding on colors and layout you must figure out what exactly your website will do. If the function of your site is to sell products that will affect its design. It will need to be able to process sales, protect customer billing information, communicate with corporate databases for shipping and customer profiles. It will need to be able to process payments from a variety of sources and possibly take coupons or discounts. If the function of the site it to share information it will need to store client profiles, edit comments for content, allow or disallow the uploading of media, and allow members to communicate with one another. It is important to find a good web designer to make your site work on both a functional and a technical level.
