Flagpole Premieres: Niño Brown, “The Internet”

Niño Brown—moniker of local hip-hop artist Cortez Garza—drops the premiere of “The Internet” today with a locally made video packed full of recognizable settings and cameos of fellow musicians. The new track arrives hot off the heals of a three-song EP called Terrible Tingz that features guest appearances by Kxng Blanco, DK, AyoPaco, Quezzy Poet and 96 Vizion, as well as “Summer Rain” the first video single teasing his upcoming album, Redbone.

“The song is a love song—nothing more, nothing less,” says Garza. “I was going through a lot of changes personally, so I was staying in every night and going to sleep super early. Then, I went to my first Volumes show and I remember going right home and finishing writing this song I had been working on.”

The video begins at Athens Health and Fitness, moves to Bear Hollow at Memorial Park, then appropriately ends where the songwriting magic began: at a show put on by Volumes Hip Hop.

Redbone’s tracks were produced by Atlanta’s Ihateyoujonny and recorded by Matt Tamsin of Japanski Studio. Writing from the heart, Cortez considers the album to be a diary from start to finish.

Conceptually, the album is about the same thing throughout: a near-miss with love,” says Garza. “I was really exploring the gamut of hip hop, new and old. Lots of pop and R&B influences, too. It’s a pretty well-rounded musical journey. I intentionally wanted to merge new melodic hip-hop stylings with older golden era stuff. I love it all!”

Redbone will be released into the world on Feb. 9.  Visit instagram.com/cortezgarzamusic for updates.
