Before I got my new computer, I was always complaining about my Internet connection speed. I had gotten cable Internet and I could not figure out why my speed was still slow and why I was becoming increasingly frustrated with being online. Because I write for a living, this was something that was not acceptable to me, and I needed to make a change. So, I figured it was time to check my internet connection speed. What I didn’t realize was that the speed of my Internet has more to do with my computer than it did with what type of service I had.
There are sites available where you can check internet connection speed. Places such as speedtest.net and cnet.com, to name a few, have broadband internet connection speed test. I don’t know how accurate they are and most are a bit over reaching if you ask me. If you are promised by your ISP that you have a certain download/upload speed range then ask them what test is the one to use for verification!
Sometimes the results that you receive and how accurate they are really depends on where the test site is located and to what proximity to you it is. It also has a lot to do with what programs that you have running on your computer, such as anti-virus and malware/spyware programs will slow down your download capabilities among what other programs are using the bandwidth as well.
And one thing the ISPs really hate to admit to is if you are using your computer during prime time…you will be much slower than advertised. The ISP’s promise you high download speeds but fail to tell you that you are on shared bandwidth with your neighbors and whom else is within that particular section of the IP range. and so when you are all on at the same time your speed is much slower.
However, I learned that even though my connection should have been super fast, it was partially because of my computer that it wasn’t. The fastest Internet connection speed won’t do much good if the computer cannot process the information in a fast and efficient manner. The information is going into the computer as quickly as it should be, and that’s why the Internet connection speed test will say that everything is fine, but the computer cannot display it as quickly as it should if the processor is old.
When I got my new computer I went through the routine to check my internet connection speed. I soon realized that I was frustrated with the wrong things. My Internet connection speed was the same, but the pages loaded much more quickly than on my old computer. My wife had gotten me a laptop to use for work, and once she saw how fast it went, she didn’t want to use our old desktop model any longer. She had to go out and get a new desktop for her use because she simply couldn’t handle the slow processing any longer.
Someone who wants to see more from their Internet connection speed might not need to buy a new computer, but in most cases, this is what needs to be done. However, replacing the processor for something faster might help, but this might cost almost as much as buying a new computer if you don’t have to have one that is top of the line. Either way, when your Internet connection speed is slow it might not be because your provider is slow, it might just be the computer that is being used to connect to the Internet. If a new computer is purchased and things still aren’t what they should be, it might be time to call the provider to see if something else is wrong.
