Column criticizes Bloomington fiber internet deal with Meridiam

Approximately 98% of Bloomington homes have fast internet service available at their doorstep, yet only 72% are connected. Mayor John Hamilton has admirably committed to closing this digital divide, striving for universal connectivity.

But while city officials have hailed Bloomington’s proposed fiber network deal with Meridiam Infrastructure North America Corp as the centerpiece of this digital equity vision, a close look at the deal’s fine print confirms it is not a real solution – and may do more harm than good.

The inclusive, competitive digital future we all want requires clearing three hurdles: building out networks to reach 100% of homes; increasing adoption to get more of our neighbors connected and empowered; and ensuring government creates a level playing field for all providers by encouraging private investment and better serving residents and businesses.
