Did Emma Chamberlain wear the Patiala Necklace for Met Gala 2022? Internet has a lot to say

Kim Kardashian made a strong statement at the Met Gala 2022 as she wore pop icon Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress for fashion’s biggest night. However, Kim was not the only one to wear something with historical significance. Popular internet personality Emma Chamberlain also reportedly wore a neck choker that belonged to Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh. Yes, you read that right.

This year, Emma Chamberlain walked the Met Gala red carpet in a Louis Vuitton ensemble. It featured a cropped corset-inspired top and an ivory body-hugging skirt. However, it is her assemblage of jewellery that stole everyone’s attention. Emma, who is the ambassador of luxury jewellery brand Cartier, wore bejewelled diamond pieces including a tiara and apparently the iconic Maharaja of Patiala’s choker as well.

In 1928, the Maharaja of Patiala decided to turn his De Beers diamond, the world’s seventh-largest diamond, into a choker. He commissioned Cartier to make the necklace. The necklace mysteriously disappeared after his son Maharaja Yadavindra Singh last wore it in 1948. It was recovered half a century later by Cartier representative Eric Nussbaum in London. However, it was a skeleton of its former self. It no longer had the De Beers stone and most of its Burmese rubies. So Cartier set about restoring the necklace sans the De Beers and other original stones.

The buzz that Emma Chamberlain wore the Patiala Necklace left the netizens talking about it. The internet, in fact, has a lot to say about it. “Thanks #cartier. Those are the jewels of the Maharaja of Patiala. That’s a piece of India’s stolen history, not a fancy piece of jewellery to lend out to celebrities. Disrespectful on so many levels,” a Twitter user wrote.

Here are some more reactions:

Meanwhile, a section of the internet said that the choker worn by Emma Chamberlain is not the Patiala Necklace.

Neither Cartier nor Emma Chamberlain have commented on the matter yet.
