HERMON — Residents in the towns of Hermon, DeKalb, Russell and Edwards were introduced to the new high-speed internet service at a news conference hosted by provider TDS Telecom Wednesday morning at the Hermon Fire Hall.
Scott Brooks, state government affairs manager for TDS, addressed a crowd of about 50 people on the new high-speed TDS fiber optics project.
“It’s been a very exciting project for us. We’ve been committed to this community for a long time and now with fiber, residents will once again have a positive experience,” Mr. Brooks said.
TDS Telecom has owned the Edwards Telephone Company since 1973.
Mr. Brooks was joined by Randy Smith, project manager.
The announcement capped the completion of Phases 1 and 2 of the TDS fiber project, which involved the installation of 181 miles of fiber-optic cable in the Edwards Telephone Company footprint and added 14 Fiber Distribution Hub cabinets to house network connections. The new network will now deliver internet speeds of up to one gigabit per second to nearly 1,330 addresses in the four-town area.
The final phase of the project is expected to be completed in mid-2019, opening high-speed internet service to an additional 390 households.
“I hope it’s feasible for a lot of our residents to take advantage of,” said Nicole Bacon Ward, Hermon town supervisor. It was noted the new service will benefit parents who homeschool their children and make telemedicine available for users.
TDS Telecom was awarded state funding through the New NY Broadband Program for all three phases. TDS was awarded approximately $21.5 million statewide as part of the grant program, and TDS is also investing nearly $13.5 million in private capital. The company’s other grants will impact residents and businesses the Township Telephone Company (Chaumont), Deposit Telephone Company and Port Byron Telephone Company.
Mr. Brooks told people in attendance there is no data cap, no contract and no one will be automatically placed on the new service. The switch will only be made when a person requests the new service.
