ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) – New funding from the Federal Communications Commission means more of rural North Central Florida will receive access to broadband internet service.
The satellite company Viasat Inc. won $5 million from the FCC in the eighth round of funding from the Connect America Fund Auction. It’s a broader effort to close a digital divide in rural America.

Since it is subsidized by the federal government, internet costs are supposed to be more affordable.
This is part of a $1.5 billion government drive to bring more internet access to unserved areas.
