Claire Boucher, known by her pseudonym Grimes, appears to have split with her on-and-off boyfriend Elon Musk, and is reportedly now in a relationship with former U.S. Army intelligence analyst and whistleblower Chelsea Manning, according to Page 6.
The reveal took the internet by storm, as the announcement comes a day after Grimes revealed, seemingly inadvertently during a Vanity Fair profile, that she and Musk had conceived a second baby via surrogate, a daughter named “Exa Dark Sideræl Musk.”
During the interview, Grimes revealed some eyebrow-raising details about her relationship with Musk, specifically the fact that the billionaire regularly wonders, out loud, if Grimes might be a synthetic companion.
Musk is famous for his (apparently sincere) suspicion that our universe is just a simulation (he also seems to believe he’s the main character of said simulation). Grimes’ dramatic, unexpected switch from Musk to Manning had the internet wondering if perhaps Musk had a point.
Other Twitter users joked that Grimes is about to experience a dramatic political awakening. While Musk is a proud, union-busting billionaire, Manning is an outspoken leftist who was sentenced to 35 years in prison after leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks, serving 7 years before former President Barack Obama commuted her remaining sentence.
Hence, Grimes, who is notorious for posing as a revolutionary (having once posed for paparazzi pretending to read a copy of The Communist Manifesto) is now dating a real leftist, right after having a second child with one of the richest men in the world.
In her Vanity Fair profile, Grimes has described her and Musk’s lifestyle as, at times, living “below the poverty line,” claiming that Musk “wouldn’t even get a new mattress. Bro does not live like a billionaire.” She also reflected on her fluid political beliefs:
“When people say I’m a class traitor that is not…an inaccurate description. I was deeply from the far left and I converted to being essentially a capitalist Democrat. A lot of people are understandably upset.”
After the profile was released, Grimes clarified her politics on Twitter, writing:
“I am not a capitalist democrat. I don’t ascribe to any political party or economic model that currently exists.” In the same thread, she also describes Musk as “the love of my life,” despite having just broken up with him.
If reality really is a simulation, Grimes might just be a glitch in the Matrix.
