Internet connection problems on Samsung smart TVs can be especially frustrating because they can be caused by a wide variety of issues, but that also means there are many ways to correct them. With any Wi-Fi enabled device there will be moments where everything seems like it should be working fine, but some random error occurs. The best way to approach these scenarios is to remember that the simplest solution is typically the correct one.
A malfunctioning smart TV is perhaps more frustrating than any other home networking problem because it’s very easy to fall into relying on these displays in our daily lives. When all of your entertainment needs – on-demand movies, sports, YouTube, Netflix, HBO – are met by one device and that device suddenly stops working, it feels like your free time has been derailed. These are all reasonable ways to approach a smart TV connection problem because, regardless of the cause, these steps should either address it or rule out everything except an actual hardware issue requiring maintenance or a replacement (the rarest potential outcome). Additionally, these steps will typically solve Wi-FI issues on most internet-connected devices. The sequence and reasoning behind these ideas could perhaps be adjusted, though.
Resetting Your Router Is Usually the Answer
Samsung’s tips initially suggest taking a look at the smart TV’s connection status menu. This screen will tell you how strong the TV’s connection to the router is, usually via a percentage. That’s most often an indicator of distance, so the closer the router is to the TV, the higher that percentage should be. This means repositioning a router is probably unnecessary since a router being too far away would have likely caused a consistent issue.
That leaves resetting the router. While it may seem like the stereotypical “try turning it on and off” solution, power cycling a wireless router is a very useful process. The old standby of unplugging the power for ten seconds then plugging it back in works because it allows the router to run all of its startup processes from step one again. If the issue that brought down your connection was due to a bug or a memory leak (extremely common problems), starting from the beginning will usually resolve those issues. It also helps that this is an easy troubleshooting method to execute.
In the majority of cases, if nothing about the network environment has changed (the router hasn’t been moved, there isn’t a major influx of new devices connecting to your home Wi-Fi) and resetting the router hasn’t helped, that’s where changing the DNS comes in. And, if that doesn’t solve it, the next step is to examine if it’s a larger issue with your internet service provider, or a hardware issue. However, in almost every situation, a router reset should do the trick and get your Samsung TV connected again.
