One of the biggest mistakes that product creators make is creating products that they think people need. The problem is, people don’t buy products that they need. They buy products that they want. And unless you understand this, you’re going to keep creating things that will continue to fail in the marketplace time and time again. This article is going to give you a few examples of what I’m talking about.
I am guilty of this myself, so let’s start off with my biggest dud. I figured that a lot of marketers want to create their own products and will need a sales page to sell them. So I wrote a book on copywriting so that they can write their own copy and not have to pay a copywriter. Problem is, marketers are lazy and don’t want to write sales letters. They’d rather pay to have it done. As a result, the product has been a marginal seller for me. And believe me, I know how to market.
Here’s another example. Friend of mine decided that he wanted to create a product that teach people how to do web design. Now let’s face it, there are a lot of people who want to design web sites, so certainly this would sell, right? Wrong. The problem is, there is way too much free info on the Internet on web design. Why should people pay for this information when they don’t have to? As a result, another dud.
For my last example, I’ll use myself as a test case again. I’m not proud. I’ve always been into fortune telling. As a matter of fact, I designed a new way to do it using dice. I figured I’d write a book and sell it as a new way to do fortune telling that people could learn. Problem is, people don’t want to learn this stuff anymore. It’s not like the old days. Plus, they don’t want to learn anything new. All they want is to go to a psychic and have their fortunes told. As a result, the product has been almost a total disaster.
As you can see, you can’t just create a product and put it out there. You have to first do your research to make sure that people actually want it. Otherwise, you’re going to have a pretty big failure on your hands.
