I’m a mom, you’re a mom. My tips on kids Internet usage, and the best Internet parental control.
So, you get a family/home computer. Your kids are excited! They can email, chat with friends, and surf for the latest games just like every other kid on the block! Whoa! As you open your selected home page, there is so much to click on! What is safe for my kids? I hear you. Let’s talk tips!
Tip #1 Make a list of Rules! Yep! With the computer comes rules! Examples:
Limit usage time, 30 minutes works for us.
Limit what they do on line– no chatting in chat rooms, or no blogging, whatever that is! (Email, My space, and Research. Those are our three allow-ables. )
Then make a list of absolutely nots! No pirating movies, No Questionable websites, Do Not download games (or anything) without permission, etc. Your kids will probably resent you at first for not letting them have their Internet freedoms, but if we did, we wouldn’t be acting like parents would we?
Tip #2 Make the computer a topic of conversation! Let them tell you all about the drama going on through emails, let them tell you about the latest game that they would love to have. Let them ask you if they can do this or that… This makes such a big difference for your kids. If they are under the impression that you are honestly interested in their life- on the computer- they will feel more comfortable coming to you if ever something goes wrong… And don’t preach at them what you expect they do and not do, and then yell at them for disobeying. The Internet can be deceiving, sometimes as kids, they just don’t know any better. When you have open communication about it, they are more likely to come to you…and when you are understanding about it, wow, they don’t hate you after all.
Tip #3 Get the best Internet parental control you can find! What is Internet parental control? It is your safety net. No family computer should be without Internet parental control software. This software allows you to control what your kids can see, or where they can go on your computer. You can block certain sites, keywords, and monitor their activity as they surf the net. This is an invaluable tool, for you as a parent. Get one, now!
Tip #4 Share with other parents… it doesn’t do much good if your kid can’t get to certain sites on your home computer, but can go over to the neighbors and get it there…spread the word. Get Internet parental control software and get in the business of protecting children from vile predators on the Internet.
We must take action as parents to protect our kids on line, mom to mom, I hope this article helps open your eyes to the great responsibility we have to protect our sons, our daughters, even our grandchildren, from dangers of having the Internet in the home. Don’t get me wrong, it can also be a great asset, but only if used properly. Let’s begin with our children so they may grow to be advocates for a clean Internet society.
