The following contains spoilers from Moon Knight Episode 4, “The Tomb,” now streaming on Disney+.Marvel Studios has released some new hi-res photos from Moon Knight, including one that spotlights the hippo goddess, Taweret.
The photos were posted on the Marvel Studios Twitter page and come from Episode 4 of the series, “The Tomb.” They also showcase Layla (May Calamawy) and Marc (Oscar Isaac) in the psychiatric hospital, the therapist resembling Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) and Marc and Steven moments before they run into Taweret.
The end of “The Tomb” saw Harrow shoot Marc, only for the former to wake up in a psychiatric hospital full of people and symbols from his life. While there, he finds Steven, and the two seek a way to escape the area. However, in the closing moments of the episode, instead of an exit, they are greeted by a friendly Taweret.
Taweret is the Egyptian goddess associated with fertility, childbirth, the protection of mothers and their newborn offspring and rebirth. She was called upon by her worshippers during labor to ensure the good health of the mother and child. While she bears the head of a hippopotamus, she has the paws of a lion and the tail of a crocodile.
Taweret is the latest Egyptian god to have a presence in the Disney+ series. Aside from the grumpy moon god Khonshu, the avatars of Hathor, Horus and Osiris have made an appearance. Harrow is also nearly ready to release Ammit from his prison, so his debut is not out of the question.
Gods have played a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) of late. Eternals revealed that many of its heroes were the inspiration for some of history’s most famous gods and goddesses, including Athena (Angelina Jolie’s Thena), Quetzalcoatl (Salma Hayek’s Ajak) and Hephaestus (Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos).
Meanwhile, Thor: Love and Thunder is set to introduce Olympus and the Greek gods to the MCU, ruled by the Greek god of the sky Zeus (Russell Crowe). Between them, the Egyptian gods and Thor and his fellow Norse gods, Christian Bale’s villainous Gorr the God Butcher will have plenty of potential targets when he makes his debut in the God of Thunder’s next chapter.
