Pic of textbook listing ‘merits of dowry’ goes viral. Internet is furious

A picture of a college book page featuring the “merits of dowry” has gone viral online. The image was posted on Twitter by a user named Aparna and is from the Textbook of Sociology for Nurses. The post was shared on Sunday and has prompted a wave of shocked and angry reactions from netizens.

The textbook is authored by TK Indrani and is for students as per the Indian Nursing Council syllabus. A page of it lists the “merits and advantages of dowry”. The first point states that “dowry is helpful in establishing new households with furniture, appliances such as refrigerators and vehicles.” It also says that an indirect advantage of the system is that parents have started educating their girls so as to give less dowry.

Lastly, it mentions that ugly looking girls can be married off with an attractive dowry.

“College textbook in India,” reads the caption of the post.

After being shared online, the post went viral on Twitter, drawing flak and furious reactions from netizens.

“This is from a college textbook. Really shocking,” a user wrote.

Another user commented, “This is outrageous. Textbook of Sociology for nurses propagating the merits of dowry! This needs to be removed from circulation.”

In fact, Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi requested Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan to remove such books from circulation. “I request Shri @dpradhanbjp ji to remove such books from circulation. That a textbook elaborating the merits of dowry can actually exist in our curriculum is a shame for the nation and its constitution,” she wrote.
