People in several Eastern Carolina counties will soon have faster internet access.
Nearly $10 million is being awarded to 19 rural counties to expand access to broadband or high-speed internet.
In the east, that includes Bertie, Greene, Halifax, Jones and Lenoir Counties.
Republican lawmakers created the grant under the Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) program last year to provide more economic opportunities for both people and businesses.
It will impact 9,800 homes and almost 600 businesses, agricultural operations, libraries, schools and hospitals.
