BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) – We’re coming up on hurricane season again and that means staying updated.
Many people rely on the internet these days for storm warnings.
One way to do that is through the brand new KBTX Weather app (see Related Links).
Even if we don’t end up in the path of one, our area is still prone to strong thunderstorms that can knock out your power and internet services.
But there are different ways get important updates where internet service is spotty or non-existent.
One way is through email by texting. Every phone has an email address.
For example if you have Verizon, your phone’s email address is something like: firstname.lastname@example.org, or if it’s AT&T it is email@example.com. There are similar addresses for Sprint and T-Mobile.
Once you have your address, you’ll need to forward your email via text message to that address.
To do that, find the “Settings” in your phone and look for an option that lets you add a forwarding address. That’s where you type in your phone’s email address.
If you want to get updates from Twitter accounts you can set up a text alert that way, too. You don’t even have to have a Twitter account.
Just text, “Follow (username)” to 40404. For example, text “Follow @KBTXNews” or “Follow @KBTXShel”.
To send or receive Facebook updates via text message, all you have to do is go to Account Settings and click “Mobile” on the left side of the screen. Turn on Facebook Message Forwarding and Notifications.
You can then can post to Facebook as well by texting to 32665.
