Lumos Networks brings gigabit fiber internet to Alleghany Highlands

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A Charlotte, NC fiber-based telecommunications provider is expanding its services to Alleghany County.

Lumos Networks completed a project that will provide 100 percent gigabit fiber internet speed to the Alleghany Highlands — for those within the company’s service area. According to the company, Alleghany Highlands is one of the few areas of its size to have 100 percent gigabit internet speed.

“We are well-positioned in terms of corporate leadership to support our plans to aggressively expand our fiber footprint,” Diego Anderson, Chief Executive Officer for Lumos said. “Our leadership team will be actively engaging local and state leaders as we form public-private partnerships to address the need for equitable, affordable gig-speed broadband that is vital for work-from-home, video calls, virtual learning, and local economic growth that improves the lives of everyone in our communities. The gig economy is only made possible by a future-proof fiber network. Our new leadership team has the vision, expertise, resources, and passion for bringing the first fiber network to many more underserved communities across the Mid-Atlantic.”

This announcement will bring enhanced economic development opportunities, improved remote working and learning, and advanced telemedicine, according to the executive leadership team from Lumos.

The CEO of Lumos tells WFXR News that the company has plans to expand into rural, harder-to-reach areas of Virginia and North Carolina in the future.
