Deciding what to study in college is a major decision in the life of a young person. In order to have the most career opportunities, I think it is very wise to select engineering as a field of study. Engineering teaches students many useful disciplines that can be applied to all areas of life. Moreover, this dynamic field is used in all sectors of the real world.
Science and math, two very logical and objective studies, form the foundation of engineering. When a student applies these principles to real world problems, he develops a structural discipline for how to achieve solutions. This discipline is not only useful for today’s biggest engineering challenges but also for other real world difficulties the student may face. Engineering teaches the invaluable lesson of problem solving, how to dissect a problem and rationally develop a solution through a structured process of reason and thought.
Engineering is also a very useful field of study because it can be applied to so many different sectors of the real world. There are numerous subfields that have different yet equally important applications. It is easy for a student to find a specialty that fits his strengths in areas ranging from environmental engineering to electrical engineering to civil engineering. Furthermore, engineers are hired by all types of businesses, not just engineering-specific contractors or researchers. They are needed in car companies, law firms, and government agencies alike. This gives an engineering student infinite possibilities to find a career.
Lastly, the field of engineering is ever-changing. As the world around us grows and changes, we are presented with new challenges that must be solved. What is the solution to our energy crisis? How to can we make transportation safer? What new technological developments will change our lifestyles? Engineers lead the way to developing solutions and advancing our civilization. New technologies are waiting to be discovered, and it will take an enthusiastic generation of engineers to find them.
As a young person myself looking to decide on what to study, I understand the importance of this decision. From the knowledge I have of engineering and its uses, I feel that studying it would be highly beneficial to anyone looking to have a successful and rewarding career. Many people have realized spectacular lives as engineers. Where would our world be without Westinghouse’s AC power, Strauss’ Golden Gate Bridge, or Wozniak’s computers? Engineers have the opportunity day in and day out to better our world by applying math, science, and reason to real world challenges.
