Miami has a bye week to prepare for one of their biggest rivals.
Coastal Division foe Virginia Tech.
The Hokies (2-2, 0-2) are not off to a strong start to the 2019 season, losing two games against ACC opponents.
Virginia Tech is coming off a 45-10 loss to Duke at Lane Stadium on Friday night–the worst ever ACC lost for the Hokies.
“Obviously, we are not ready and not at the point where we can compete and play and have a chance to win against that team we played tonight,” Fuente said during his postgame press conference following the Duke game. “That’s my responsibility and my fault. I do believe in our group and we’ve got to, I’ve got to, find a way to get more out of them in all three phases of the game.”
Miami has won their last two match-ups against Virginia Tech. In 2018, UM handled the Hokies at Lane Stadium, 38-14. The previous season, the Hurricanes beat Virginia Tech 28-10 at Hard Rock Stadium.
UM is 19-3 in games played at Hard Rock Stadium since 2016.
Virginia Tech los their season opener to Boston College, 35-28. The Hokies beat Old Dominion 31-17 in week two and squeaked out a 24-17 win over Furman.
This season will be the final season at Virginia Tech for respected defensive coordinator Bud Foster.
Foster will have eight days to get his defense better after a disappointing performance against Duke on Friday night.
“We’ve got a lot of football left,” Foster said on Friday night. “I know we’re disappointed right now. It seemed like that turnover and then how that next play just took the wind right out of everything, out of the energy in the stadium it seemed like. That’s kind of what I got out of that thing. We came back out in the second half, we had an opportunity to make a stop.
“They got a couple first downs, but we did get a stop. We couldn’t get anything generated and then we gave up a couple big plays there in the second half. You can’t give up explosive plays. You got to give credit on a gadget play here or there and then obviously they had the fake punt which was a big play off of a stop. Those are plays that will come back and haunt you and they did. That’s kind of it in a nutshell when it’s all said and done.”
Miami’s game against Virginia Tech is set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. EST.
