Google’s preparing to transform your mobile experience with more shopping tools, including Purchases, which is the official name for the Google Buy Button.
Being tested on Google mobile search right now, that button is not exactly a one-step shopping button.
According to a Google, which posted a blog on all of its mobile shopping updates on Wednesday, Purchases will appear as “Buy on Google” or “Checkout” button with some items. If a mobile user clicks on that button, which will usually appear below the search result item, they’ll end up in a retailer-branded site where they can purchase the product. The site and purchase process will be hosted by Google, while the retailer will maintain the transaction connection to the customer.
Google will charge retailers for the search-generated click, but won’t make any money off the transaction.
Google is also bolstering shopping imagery. If you search for something that triggers Google shopping ads (doesn’t everything?) at the top of your results, the ribbon will now expand if you begin swiping through it. That will offer bigger images and more information on each retail item. Google’s rolling out the feature on Chrome for Android now with iOS support planned for later this year.
The search giant has also redesigned shopping ads to highlight ratings and reviews. Some products will even offer a product specs (or attributes) card so shoppers can find out if that smartphone has an 8- or 13 MP camera.
Google has been offering inventory information in shopping ads for two years, but now it will, with the assistance of participating retailers, increase the number of inventory listings you can swipe through.
These retail-facing updates come just weeks after Google rechristened “Google Wallet” “Android Pay.” The updated mobile wallet system will help mobile shoppers make physical purchases when they’re on-the go and may dovetail nicely with the updated Google Now in-store cards, which show store hours and loyalty card info when you’re near a participating retailer.
