Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez decimated the field on his way to pole position in MotoGP qualifying in Argentina. The defending champion was nearly half a second quicker than his closest competition at the end of Q2. Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Aleix Espargaro starts from the front row in second followed by Ducati’s Andrea Iannone in third.

Marquez set the pace during the initial minutes of the session, placing first ahead of Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo and Espargaro after the first flying laps. Both Marquez and Espargaro utilized the strategy of going out on their first bikes at the start of the session, making a quick switch to the second bikes mid-way through and finishing on first.

Marquez flew round the track on his pole-winning run, finishing within two tenths off the record time he set at the circuit in 2014. Espargaro, on the other hand, was unable to better his previous effort, but it proved to be good enough for a second-place result once the session closed.

Iannone pushed hard during the latter stages for his third-place result, while CWM LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow trailed in fourth. Lorenzo dropped to fifth by the end of the session followed by Iannone’s teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, in sixth.
