There seems to be a bit of a theme with recent Fortnite items. Just this week we got the “Quad Launcher,” a four-tubed rocket launcher meant to knock down structures and take out enemies with rapid-firing explosives. And just today a new item appeared on the in-game news feed: a “Quadcrasher,” presumably named so because it looks a little like a four-wheeler. For those following along at home that means we’ll soon have three vehicles in the game: the shopping cart, the ATV, and soon the Quadcrasher.
This one looks pretty different from the ATV, however, which is primarily used for transport and tricks. The description says that it will come with a boost designed to crash through structures, meaning that it will have a use in combat beyond ferrying players to and from it. In the right circumstances, something like this could be hugely powerful: I’m imagining careening through the bottom of a player-built base and knocking them out of the sky.
It’s pretty unclear when such an item would be arriving, however. We just got v6.02 yesterday, and nobody’s expecting another patch until next week. In-game news alerts usually go up over the weekend or at the beginning of the week, just a day or two before the new item actually arrives. This seems like it has to be a little longer, though stranger things have happened.
When it does arrive, I’m going to predict some technical issues. Both ATVs and Shopping Carts went through several rounds of bugs, disabling and re-enabling, and that wouldn’t be impossible this time around. It’s also possible that Epic has a much better handle on how to handle wheeled objects since those early days, but it’s not hard to imagine that boost causing all sorts of unexpected strangeness.
The timing is interesting, I should note, and might explain a little bit of why we’re seeing this so early. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 comes out tomorrow along with its own battle royale mode: Blackout. And Blackout just so happens to have an extensive vehicle component. Is Fortnite trying to up its game in face of new competition? It’s not a terrible idea.
