The scarf that broke the internet: Taylor Swift sends Twitter wild

Taylor Swift hit headlines far and wide last week, when she released the new rendition of her 2012 song All Too Well, which is widely rumored to be written about her brief romance with Jake Gyllenhaal.

The internet was set alight with references to an unreturned red scarf and the discourse stemming from buzz around Swift’s directorial debut for the song, which she made into a 10-minute short film.

The track opens with the line: ‘I walked through the door with you, the air was cold, but something about it felt like home somehow, and I, left my scarf there at your sister’s house, and you’ve still got it in your drawer even now.’

Soon after, tweeters and fans were firing up their keyboards to joke about the dramas – with messages ranging to comments about the actor’s hygiene, calls for Joe Biden to chime in, a surge in the sales of red scarves and a legion of messages from superstar fans.

So what has the internet got to say for Taylor’s wooly woes?

SUPERSTAR SUPPORT

Superstar Dionne Warwick, 80, paved the way for Taylor’s A-list fanbase to get involved, as she sent people wild with a hilarious message offering to pay for postage. She penned: ‘If that young man has Taylor’s scarf he should return it… It does not belong to you. Box it up and I will pay the cost of postage, Jake.’

Camila Cabello got in on the action as she shared four snaps in a red scarf and added the caption: ‘thnx for my red scarf @taylorswift13!!!!! happy red day and also cozy season is here’.

Andrew Burnap, who worked with Gyllenhaal on Broadway, thinks he may be the one with the accessory. On Friday he tweeted: ‘this is gonna sound crazy and you will definitely think i’m kidding but i’m not – i think i am in possession of that scarf.’

GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION

Some were feeling particularly playful as they plotted for the government to intervene in the safe return of her scarf: ‘What is Joe Biden’s plan to get Taylor Swift her scarf back’.

Kamala Harris also came into the narrative when her famous ‘We did it Joe’ phonecall was used as reference.

The tweeter joked that Taylor was calling her boyfriend Joe Alwyn to celebrate riling her ‘Swiftie’ army.

The tweet read: ‘Taylor Swift calling Joe Alwyn after amassing an army of Swifties ready to take over the world for a red scarf and a crumpled piece of paper’.

BUYING A NEW SCARF

Despite her multimillionaire status, some fans were even begging to let them buy Taylor a scarf replacement: ‘THIS IS SO F**KING SAD @taylorswift13 PLEASE MA’AM ALLOW ME TO BUY YOU A NEW SCARF #AllTooWellTheShortFilm’.

Capitalising off the situation was eBay, as bosses behind the official Twitter account for the online market place shared an image of a red scarf for sale and penned: ‘Hey Jake Gyllenhaal, we know all too well how much you love scarves! How about owning your own so you don’t have to keep @taylorswift13’s?…

‘This one here’s nice, if not, we’ve got 242,666 other listings to choose from?’

HYGIENE

Others were quick to reference the news story from earlier this year, in which Jake told Vanity Fair: ‘More and more I find bathing to be less necessary, at times’, leading to shock around the world over his showering habits.

He went on: ”I do believe, because Elvis Costello is wonderful, that good manners and bad breath get you nowhere. So I do that. But I do also think that there’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves.’

Tweeters referenced the washing scandal and the scarf, penning: ‘If Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t shower that means that scarf would never get washed #AllTooWellTheShortFilm #TaylorSwift…

‘Still wild to me that one of the best Taylor Swift songs is about a guy who does not shower regularly lol. I bet that old scarf he kept from that very first week already smells like something else hahaha jk’.

Another demanded: ‘take a shower and give taylor her scarf back’.
