Oh joy! Clicking on the Apple website has a bunch of cool new elements today. No, not new products, but a fantastically realized invasion by games characters, designed to make you aware of Apple Arcade if you weren’t before.
When you land on apple.com, it looks completely normal. Wait a second or two and Hazard, hero of the Arcade game Hot Lava swings into view. Not only that, he drops down to the screen to bounce deftly off three of the iPhone 11 models decorating the screen.
In case you don’t recognize him, Apple has thoughtfully included some splashes of lava, too, and it’s lucky those iPhones were resilient enough to support him. Once they’re gone, normal service is resumed and you can click on one of the iPhone 11 images to go to the appropriate page. If you’re thinking of buying an iPhone 11, by the way, you can read my review here.
No, of course not, there’s another treat in store.
dScroll down to the next item, the 16in MacBook Pro, and wait just a second and Sonic the Hedgehog drives from around the back of the computer where he’d been waiting, it seems. Pausing only to acknowledge you, the spiny speedster then mounts the laptop keyboard and shoots across and away again.
Look how the wheels struggle with the edge of the keyboard, how the car’s headlights are subtly reflected in the MacBook Pro screen. Again, as soon as it’s gone, you can tap to go to the MacBook Pro page. And again, if you’re thinking of buying, perhaps check out my review first: it’s here.
There’s more, right?
You’re getting the hang of this.
Next when you scroll down is the iPad, but perched on the Apple Pencil on screen is a park ranger from Sneaky Sasquatch. And, immediately, the title character jumps down and bounces out of view with the ranger’s picnic cooler.
Yes. How about Apple TV? The crew from LEGO Brawls imaginatively use the Apple TV remote as a springboard to bring their game onscreen. Of course, Apple TV is accessible to you once the little critters have calmed down.
AirPods Pro come next. But here, they’re being worn by a games character. Instantly, the image resolves into a full description of Apple Arcade, with details of how to sign up.
Overall, it’s pretty cool – check it out now at apple.com.
