Design & Trend reported earlier this week that journalist Peter Rojas claimed that Google will be unveiling a standalone Android VR headset during its I/O conference next week.

Rojas’s sources say that the headset would be better than Samsung’s Gear VR, but it won’t be up to par with the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift.

Now, developers have discovered a reference to the Android VR headset in the Google Play Developer Console seemingly confirming Rojas’s claims, according to Android Police.

The Developer Console clearly shows Android VR listed alongside Android Wear, Android TV and Android Auto.

Clicking on the Android VR icon doesn’t do anything and the icon itself looks very similar to Android Wear suggesting that it’s only a placeholder for now.

The addition of the placeholder is timely considering that Google’s I/O conference is just a few days away.

References to Android VR were also previously discovered in Android N’s coding, further strengthening Rojas’s claims.

However, since the discovery of the Android VR code in Android N, it has also sparked speculation that it may simply be an advanced version of Google Cardboard.

The problem here is that Google Cardboard requires a compatible smartphone to work, and this contradicts Rojas’s claim that it would be a standalone product.

It’s possible that the headset will require an Android N smartphone but through a wired connection instead of inserting a handset, as speculated by 9To5Google.

This makes the headset truly universal because phone size would no longer be a restriction.

These are all speculations for now, but one thing that’s for sure is that Google will unveil it during its upcoming I/O conference which kicks off next week.

Speaking of the conference, Google has also released the Google I/O 2016 app for iOS devices. This is the first time that the company has released an iOS version of the app, according to Android Headlines.

The Google I/O 2016 app will help users easily navigate the event. For those not attending the conference, the app will help them stay informed on Google’s presentations and other announcements.

Google I/O 2016 will take place in Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View, CA and will start on May 18 and end on May 20.
