More security is welcome
Valve has elected to impose restrictions on Steam accounts that have spent the equivalent of USD $5 or less through the platform’s storefront.
Until an account has met this criteria, it will be restricted from sending friend invites; opening group chat; voting on Greenlight, Steam Reviews and Workshop items; participating in the Steam Market; posting frequently in Steam Discussions; gaining Steam Profile Levels and Trading Cards; submitting content on the Steam Workshop; posting in an item’s Steam Workshop Discussions; accessing the Steam Web API; and using browser and mobile chat.
You can’t get around the restrictions by activating retail games or promotional keys, receiving gifts, adding game shortcuts to your library, or playing free content. You also can’t get the restrictions lifted through Steam Support. If a purchase is refunded, that amount will be deducted from your account worth, and you’ll end up restricted again.
Although this might seem a bit harsh for those who play free-to-play games only, it’s going to make it harder for scammers and hackers to leverage throwaway accounts in their nefarious plans.
